Newspaper poster final draft

I have now completed my final draft of my newspaper poster and am quite satisifed with it.

I have kept the same style from the original draft but changed my pictures to more bright and visually appealing images which would actually attract people to buying my newspaper.

I have included the original masthead from my newspaper which makes it seem more professional and links them together well.

Instead of the small paragraph of text about the entertainment section, I have changed it to a short sentence in bold text exclaiming its the "Ultimate guide to entertainment in the south west" which is more eye catching and will attract people more than the paragraph of text which was difficult to read and unconventional.

I have also added the logo so people will immediately associate this poster with our newspaper, the slogan and website is also at the bottom.

I did limited editing to the photos but the one with the sky I edited so it looked like a bright sunny day

Radio Advert Ideas

We have had several ideas regarding our radio advert after researching them.

Our intial ideas were to have a disequilibrium between two people and have it resolved by our newspaper several ideas for this were:

  • someone being out of touch and not knowing what is going on in their community

  • someone who wants travel information but doesnt know where to go

  • someone who wants information on properties in the local area but is unfimilar with using the internet

  • someone who is lonely and wants to find love but doesnt know how to go about it

  • A foreign man wanting to go back to his own country because its very boring in his local area then someone reccomends the North Somerset News to get information on all the things going on that he did not realise.
We eventually went with the idea of two people looking for propeties in the local area and decided to use two elderly women as our target audience is the older generation.

After sampling some of the music files in GarageBand which is the software we will use we decided we could make good use of the background commotion noise and fast jingle to set a scene and relay a lot of information about our product in a short space of time which we found common in a lot of adverts we researched.

Newspaper poster developments

Posters from shared area for analysis

This poster displays various conventions of posters by having the mast head in big bold lettering across the bottom of the page along with other media details for example in this one is their website.
The background is very plain and easy on the eyes consisting of one single colour.
The poster displays what its says very clearly with an image of horse riders and text telling you what its about.
The large green text looks very important and bold and makes you stop and look at it.

The background on this poster is one single colour and very plain. There is a varied use of fonts for different sections of the poster. The fonts are clear and contrasting (yellow on blue/ white on blue) which make them stand out well and catch your eye. This could be a good technique to use when creaitng my poster.

The background on this poster consists of two colours together in blocks with writing on top of them, the colours are constrasting and the entire poster follows the same kind of colour pallette with blues and whites. Once again I've noticed that the fonts on this poster are very clear and stand out well against the background, the design is not cluttered at all and is infact very simple but retains a certain professional touch.

I have decided for my newspaper to compose it about an entertainment section in my newspaper I want to have clear distinct sections like in the ones I looked at to try and stick to conventions but would like to have several pictures of convetions.

Poster Development

For my poster I have decided to advertise the entertainment section of our newspaper

I have taken pictures of entertainment venues in my area and decided to go with a blue/white theme to match the feel of the newspaper.

This is my intial idea and design for my poster, you can clearly see the colour scheme I was going for and overall style of the poster with the four segments for entertainment venues, at this stage I hadn't got enough pictures for the other segments but I was arranging to go and take more photos when the weather improved.

My draft poster contains the title of my newspaper as well as the slogan and website address and a small bit of information about the entertainment section in the newspaper.

However I felt that there was too much small writing and it didn't stand out enough so I planned to get rid of the small text and replace it with something more striking.

From my feedback I decided to include the original masthead from my newspaper and not this one, the pictures here are also too dull and it doesn't look like a entertainment establishment that you would like to go to so it doens't work well as a poster.

On my next draft I plan to improve it in these ways.

Radio Advert Research

In looking at various radio adverts for our secondary production I found various themes and conventions used in them and a certain style for each one.

Most radio adverts are between 15 and 60 seconds in length feature 2-3 people often playing different roles. Radio adverts usually contain certain situations which involve the product or company involved for example a advert I looked at for a taxi company in Newcastle featured a situation in which a man was cold and wished he had a way to get places without walking, and decided on using a taxi company. These situations had background sounds that fit the situation for example one I looked at was taking place in a busy city had noises that would fit that situation.

Another voice not used in the situation is used to describe details about the product or company such as contact details or what they are selling or providing, usually backed by light hearted, bouncy, fun music.

Most radio adverts contain a joke or pun to keep them light hearted and entertaining for example an advert for a carpet company I looked at had a man falling through the floor because he didn't have a carpet to stand on. These jokes are often at the start of the advert and return at the end for a final laugh.

The slogan or company name is also said in a different way, I found a lot of the time it was sang most likely used so you remember it better and make it more interesting.

Newspaper Poster

We have looked at various newspaper posters and posters in general to see what conventions and themes are used. Some of these include having the masthead of the newspaper on the poster, usually at the top or bottom. Other conventions include having the masthead at the bottom, using a simple easy on the eyes style and colour scheme including blues and greens.
Other convention is bold text that stands out really well against the background they all contain an image or picture.

For my poster I have decided to follow the colour scheme of my newspaper with sea blue colours, I have a bar at the bottom of the poster where information such as the website and name of the newspaper goes which I noticed was used quite often when researching.

I have decided to either use one photo showing community such as a policeman helping a person or local shops, or a collage of 3 or 4 photos supporting some aspect of the newspaper.

Photoshoots

I have done several photoshoots for my newspaper articles:

Cycling accident story.
For this photo I wanted a very emotive feel as it is quite a tragic story. The subject has a very sad look upon his face and I stood on a tree to get a high angle shot as they are often assosiated with being vulnerable or sad.

This took place in the woods where the story talks about and I used two props which included flowers which I bought some flowers and placed them on the side of the tree to show where the boy died, and a bicycle as the caption below the shot shows that it was the boy who was killeds bicycle.

Woman whos cat was saved in a fire.
This photo is a medium closeup shot of the woman featured in the story with her cat. I intially planned to have this shot outdoors but the cat didnt like and it kept trying to get back in the house and wouldnt look at the camera, after changing setting to somewhere it found more comfortable I got a good shot.

I had to edit this picture on photoshop as the lighting in the room was not very bright and the ISO on my camera was too low.

Sand Castle Competition
This photo is from a real event I attended in the summer holidays when looking for stories I could include in my magazine and is an anual event that would be often found in local newspapers. My photo is of the dolphin sculpture which I thought was one of the best there and really defined the event with its water theme and a lot of effort put into it.

Litter problem.
For this small picture on the front page I asked one of the care takers to pose next to a bin with his litter picking equipment. I also got some litter and put it on the floor around the bin to emphasise the problem the article was talking about as there wasnt much litter around already.

Properties

This was for a small part of the newspaper which had a section about properties, I went out and tried to find the most attractive looking house and came out with this picture which I thought was good.

Sandcastle sculptures article

If you visited Weston-super-Mare last week you might have been lucky enough to spot some of the magnificent sand sculptures.

Sand sculpture artists from all over the globe came together to hold the annual event on Weston’s beach. The theme for this year was deep sea. Many different sculptures were to be seen including dolphins, divers and even Nemo from the Disney film. Visitors were impressed with the variety and scale of the sculptures and the attention to fine detail.

“This fantastic annual event together with the new pier attractions, is acting to drive up visitor numbers in this once popular tourist resort” said the Major of Weston, Charles Dean.

Many of the sculptures were created by members of the World Sand Sculpting Academy (WSSA), which held lessons for artistic sand sculpting on the Weston-super-Mare beach for the duration of the event.

As you enter the beach you get a full view of Weston-super-mares seafront which includes the spectacular new big wheel attraction.

The local mayor who attended the event said: “It’s a wonderful occasion that brings talented artists from around together in our humble town and we are proud to be able to host this event year after year.”

After last years event where one of the sculptures was destroyed by the weather, this years sculptures have been coated with an extra hard substance to prevent damage.

A full collection of pictures of the sculptures can be accessed on our website: www.n-somersetnews.com

Cat saved in kitchen fire article

In the early hours of this Wednesday morning a kitchen fire broke out in local woman, Barbara Davies’ house in Portbury, endangering her life and trapping her pet cat, Cleo behind the flames, the cat was saved by local boy Billy Rogers.

Mrs Davies, a pensioner who lives alone, had been cooking and when the fire started. She threw the pan into running water in the sink, Chief Daniel Chambers of the Avon fire brigade stated.

The contents of the pan then spilled over the dry towels near by causing one side of the kitchen to be set ablaze and blocking the way to the door to the rest of the house.

The woman then retreated to the garage when passing local paper boy, Billy Rogers, 12, saw her in distress and phoned the Avon fire brigade on his mobile phone while trying to calm the elderly lady down. Rogers then stated he heard cries from Barbara Davies’ cat, Cleo, from inside the kitchen and knew he had to act before it was too late. Rogers then ventured alone into the burning kitchen and managed to rescue the cat, Cleo who had jumped onto the fridge and was trapped by encroaching flames.

A fire crew lead by Chambers arrived swiftly at the scene minutes later and subdued the flames; Mrs Davies applauded the response time and quick action when on the scene once the crew had arrived.

Barbara Davies was sent to Frenchay hospital where she was treated for shock and minor smoke inhalation, but made a quick recovery and was discharged after a few hours.

“Cleo was my cherished friend and I don’t know what I would have done if Billy didn’t come along and save her.” A relieved Mrs Davies said once she had recovered.

Mrs Davies lives alone and loves the company of the black

feline. She later commented on Billy’s actions saying: “the common perception of teenagers these days in the media gives them a bad image, often called “hoodies”, and associated with ASBOs and antisocial behaviour but if young Billy here shows us anything its that our upcoming generation is as considerate and willing to help as any. “

Chief Chambers , awarded young Billy the Community Action Award for rescuing the pet cat and confirms that Kitchen fires are serious events and should be made sure they never happen to you whilst knowing how to act if the situation arises. Please review our key kitchen safety guidelines to help secure you and your family’s safety in the event of a fire.

Boy involved in cycling accident artcle

This Saturday whilst cycling through a local wood in Portishead, Johnny Brandon, aged just 16, tragically died when he collided with a tree at high speeds.

He was cycling home after a ride with his brother Hayden when the tragic accident happened. Johnny lost control of his bike whilst cycling through the woods and went over the handlebars and into a tree. Usually a careful and aware cyclist, “he always wore his cycle helmet” stated mother, Joanne Brandon. However on the day in question Johnny had taken his helmet off and stowed it away in his rucksack due to the heat. This fatal mistake cost a young boy his life.

Brandon was a valued member of his local community in the small town of Portishead, always keen to help out his neighbours in their day to day lives, or assist in productions and activities at school. “He was a very active pupil that put one hundred and one percent into whatever he tried at and enjoyed all aspects of life to the

fullest.” said his teacher, Mrs Budgie “His death was a great loss to everyone who knew him.

An active child, he enjoyed his days out cycling with his younger brother as much as all his hobbies including extreme sports such as surfing, windsurfing and kayaking.

He had aspired to pursue his love of water sports in the future when he left school the next year and had made plans to live in Cornwall with an aunt to train to become a lifeguard.

Inspector Plod of the Portishead police service reminds us that: “being safe while on your bicycle is a must even when you think you are safe on trivial things such as a cycle ride with your brother. Always wearing your helmet is vital. Make sure you have a helmet certified by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and always wear it even if you are just going on a short ride; you never know when you will be involved in an accident."

Advert Development

Advert for an insurance company in portishead.
This was a simple but very effective advert for my newspaper. In my research of local newspapers I saw the basic "block" style adverts used frequently and decided to create my own in the same style. Its basicly two blocks of colours with text on top in different fonts, dispite its simple layout and content it tells you a lot about the company and looks right at home in a local newspaper. I used publisher to create it as photoshop was not needed.

Bathroom appliances advert which sells sinks, toilets and baths/showers
I took three pictures for this in two bathrooms and crops and sorted them together to create a mini collauge of what products they have on sale. I added text on top, the text had an outer glow and I tried to make it stand out whilst not making it look too good as most adverts I looked at for research are not very complicated or use any technical effects.

Hair Dressing advert.
I took a photograph and edited it in photoshop, removing the background and adding a gray colour then using the blur tool to create a kind of "washed" look to the background. I used a very striking pink to express the feel of a hairdressing salon and grey text to match the background.

Fireplace advert for a local company that sells electric and gas fires.
For this advert I took a photograph of a fireplace and cropped it out using photoshop. I created a black blackground with a gradient to look more effective and used a dark red font that went with the theme of fire and added an effect that gave it a more fire-like feel.I added white text on top with more information about the company.

Articles draft

I have written the first draft of articles which are:

A local boy in a fatal mountain bike accident
Sand castle sculpting event in local area
Local womans cat saved by a local paper boy from kitchen fire.

I have gotten feedback on them and need to make them less like a story and more like newspaper articles.
I have ammended them and edited them to make them better.

First draft starting

We have decided on a layout by looking at various newspapers and combining the good points we liked from each of them including North Somerset Times, the Mercury and the Evening Post.
A lot of the pages will be comprised of adverts as it is a free newspaper and they need lots of adverts to maintain a profit. The newspapers we looked at had lots of adverts and up to a third of the front page was covered in them from the examples we looked at.

This is a layout I made which shows what I would like my newspaper to look like:

Slogan and logo

The logo we chose an anchor and for the slogan we chose to use "The Anchor of Local Life" because the area we are reporting in is by the sea and the marina and port is a vital part of the community and is often related to the area when talking about it.

Title and slogan ideas

An important part of any newspaper is the masthead and slogan. We wanted our newspaper to stand out from the rest and have its own identity.
We looked at local newspapers and saw that the convention in the title is having words like "Times" and "Express".

We looked at these possible name ideas:
North Somerset Express
North Somerset News
South West Express
Portishead Anchor

The candiates that we decided to put through were North Somerset News and South West Express, and in the end we decided to go with North Somerset News in the end as we felt it sounded very local and had a certain ring to it that felt that it would fit well amongst the other local newspapers in the area.

Starting our production - ideas

For the A2 production we decided to produce a local newspaper and I will be working in a team of two people. We are producing two weekly editions of the newspaper and we will produce two front pages and two other pages from the middle of the newspaper.

We had various ideas for stories and pictures going into the summer including

Primarks opening in Cabbots circus
Swine flu hitting Cornwall
GCSE results
Suicide attempt closes m5
Bristol city football clubs new stadium
Katie Price book signing

But we felt these stories were too widespread and wanted more local stories that reflect the local feel of the newspaper. We looked at local newspapes and analysed the text.
We found that the majority of newspapers would have a ratio of 2 sad stories to 4 happy stories overall so we tried to include this style in our newspaper with a sad story then 2 more cheerful ones.

We thought up some more ideas for our newspaper.

Celebrity spot of the week
Swine flu hits Portishead
Local band get signed
A local event or festival
Local swimmer- one step closer to Olympics
Student wins media award
Postman mauled by Rottweiler
Turning off of traffic lights
Local boy in fatal accident
Kitchen fire in local womans house

We managed to get pictures of some events during the summer such as the sand sculpture event in weston super mare which we got enough coverage and pictures to include it in our production.

Pre Summer work 2

We continued to study narrative and the difference between it and plot. We looked at different theories such as Tzvatan Todrorovs theory, the basic three part structure. We applied this theory to the pixar short film "Boundin" and found the equilibrium, the disruption and then the calm at the end when the characters reach a point of equilibrium again.

We then proceeded to look at videos and newspapers to decide what task we wanted to do for our coursework. We analysed newspaper articles and previous A2 music videos to discover the different features of conventions used in each one.

Monday, 28 September 2009

Pre Summer work

Before the summer we looked at the course outlines and what we wanted to achieve, we looked at the main tasks we wanted to produce for our coursework and the auxiliary tasks that went with each one.

We looked at genre in detail for section 1B, by identifying the different sections including Hybrid, Repertoire of Elements, Iconography, Style, Setting, Narrative, Themes and Audience Response. We studied sub genres too by looking at some main genres and breaking them down.

We looked at representation including good and bad stereotypes and talked about dominant beliefs in society including Native Americans were uncivilised and savages which made their deaths and the theft of their land justified in old Western movies.

We also looked at movie clips such as Public Enemies trailer and analysed it. We looked at a music video and stereotypes in the hiphop genre and how they attract their target audience.
