Advert Development

Advert for an insurance company in portishead.
This was a simple but very effective advert for my newspaper. In my research of local newspapers I saw the basic "block" style adverts used frequently and decided to create my own in the same style. Its basicly two blocks of colours with text on top in different fonts, dispite its simple layout and content it tells you a lot about the company and looks right at home in a local newspaper. I used publisher to create it as photoshop was not needed.

Bathroom appliances advert which sells sinks, toilets and baths/showers
I took three pictures for this in two bathrooms and crops and sorted them together to create a mini collauge of what products they have on sale. I added text on top, the text had an outer glow and I tried to make it stand out whilst not making it look too good as most adverts I looked at for research are not very complicated or use any technical effects.

Hair Dressing advert.
I took a photograph and edited it in photoshop, removing the background and adding a gray colour then using the blur tool to create a kind of "washed" look to the background. I used a very striking pink to express the feel of a hairdressing salon and grey text to match the background.

Fireplace advert for a local company that sells electric and gas fires.
For this advert I took a photograph of a fireplace and cropped it out using photoshop. I created a black blackground with a gradient to look more effective and used a dark red font that went with the theme of fire and added an effect that gave it a more fire-like feel.I added white text on top with more information about the company.

Articles draft

I have written the first draft of articles which are:

A local boy in a fatal mountain bike accident
Sand castle sculpting event in local area
Local womans cat saved by a local paper boy from kitchen fire.

I have gotten feedback on them and need to make them less like a story and more like newspaper articles.
I have ammended them and edited them to make them better.

First draft starting

We have decided on a layout by looking at various newspapers and combining the good points we liked from each of them including North Somerset Times, the Mercury and the Evening Post.
A lot of the pages will be comprised of adverts as it is a free newspaper and they need lots of adverts to maintain a profit. The newspapers we looked at had lots of adverts and up to a third of the front page was covered in them from the examples we looked at.

This is a layout I made which shows what I would like my newspaper to look like:

Slogan and logo

The logo we chose an anchor and for the slogan we chose to use "The Anchor of Local Life" because the area we are reporting in is by the sea and the marina and port is a vital part of the community and is often related to the area when talking about it.

Title and slogan ideas

An important part of any newspaper is the masthead and slogan. We wanted our newspaper to stand out from the rest and have its own identity.
We looked at local newspapers and saw that the convention in the title is having words like "Times" and "Express".

We looked at these possible name ideas:
North Somerset Express
North Somerset News
South West Express
Portishead Anchor

The candiates that we decided to put through were North Somerset News and South West Express, and in the end we decided to go with North Somerset News in the end as we felt it sounded very local and had a certain ring to it that felt that it would fit well amongst the other local newspapers in the area.

Starting our production - ideas

For the A2 production we decided to produce a local newspaper and I will be working in a team of two people. We are producing two weekly editions of the newspaper and we will produce two front pages and two other pages from the middle of the newspaper.

We had various ideas for stories and pictures going into the summer including

Primarks opening in Cabbots circus
Swine flu hitting Cornwall
GCSE results
Suicide attempt closes m5
Bristol city football clubs new stadium
Katie Price book signing

But we felt these stories were too widespread and wanted more local stories that reflect the local feel of the newspaper. We looked at local newspapes and analysed the text.
We found that the majority of newspapers would have a ratio of 2 sad stories to 4 happy stories overall so we tried to include this style in our newspaper with a sad story then 2 more cheerful ones.

We thought up some more ideas for our newspaper.

Celebrity spot of the week
Swine flu hits Portishead
Local band get signed
A local event or festival
Local swimmer- one step closer to Olympics
Student wins media award
Postman mauled by Rottweiler
Turning off of traffic lights
Local boy in fatal accident
Kitchen fire in local womans house

We managed to get pictures of some events during the summer such as the sand sculpture event in weston super mare which we got enough coverage and pictures to include it in our production.

Pre Summer work 2

We continued to study narrative and the difference between it and plot. We looked at different theories such as Tzvatan Todrorovs theory, the basic three part structure. We applied this theory to the pixar short film "Boundin" and found the equilibrium, the disruption and then the calm at the end when the characters reach a point of equilibrium again.

We then proceeded to look at videos and newspapers to decide what task we wanted to do for our coursework. We analysed newspaper articles and previous A2 music videos to discover the different features of conventions used in each one.
